Sequins and unicorns – this is 31

If ever an excuse was needed to drape yourself in sequins and eat a unicorn cake, surely a birthday would be it?

My birthday this year fell in the middle of a particularly busy week – squeezed between both work and personal commitments. So, the celebration wasn’t huge, but it was indeed a celebration. Bubbly and cake with a few of my favourite people, what more could I ask for?

I’m not really one for annual reflections, but it does feel like it’s been quiteĀ the year. I started the most incredible job, and with it, met a few incredible women. I lost 12kg, and put most if it on again – and, am totally ok with that. Actually, I’m more ok with myself than I’ve possibly ever been.

I got two tattoos, went blonde, went dark, and have started to embrace my own brand ofĀ weird – and yes, that might mean wearing sequins on a Thursday afternoon and getting matching unicorn tattoos. And, in keeping with the theme, I knew these magical creatures had to fit into year 31 somehow. Having met Tessa’s Bakery earlier this year – and spotting their unicorn maracons and cakes – I knew that this little unicorn needed to be part of my day.

Filled with layers of moist, dark chocolate cake and the best buttercream icing we’d ever tasted, it wasn’t just a cake with a pretty face. We ate our fill, and left the rest for breakfast the next morning – while, my balloons lasted even longer. Not only a spot for some of the best cakes and sweet treats in the city, Tessa’s Bakery is a one-stop-shop for any celebration – for everything from napkins to cake toppers and, of course, balloons. One of the best “gifts that keeps on giving”, they stayed happily floating above my desk chair at home for two weeks before losing some of their bounce.

A word of warning – even if you don’t have an event planned, by the time you leave their store you’ll be looking for any excuse to whip out a cake and invite a few friends over. Trust me.

I’m excited to be further into my 30s, and see what this decade holds – if the first year is anything to go by, I think it’s going to be pretty darn fantastic.

Thank you to Tessa’s Bakery for treating me to a birthday cake and balloons. Sequinned kimono from Ruff Tung.

31 and two months in…and I’m working on it. And, adding more sequins to my wardrobe.
