The perfect summer dress

My current style feel is very much about dresses – so much so, that I’ve implemented a self-imposed ban on buying anything besides dresses and outerwear to go with them – generally lightweight cardigans or jackets.

And, as we’re heading towards summer, there is no better time to fully embrace my love of all things flowing and floral. I’d been on the hunt for a statement summer piece for a while, and thought I’d found it in a previous Nucleus dress – but, sadly, it seemed to sell out within seconds. Thankfully, the dress-of-my-dreams has been brought back to life, if in different prints.

Nucleus is a Cape Town-based clothing studio, run by the lovely Nicole. This Everywhere Maxi dress is simply perfect. I adore maxi dresses, but only have one in my cupboard, as I’m quite particular about them. I have two main requirements: They need to have sleeves of sorts, and not be too long. As I’m 1.68m tall (5ft 6inch), I’m not exactly extraordinarily tall, so they tend to be a little long on me, but this one sits perfectly on my ankle. I also love that dresses offer an all-in-one, get-dressed-in-5-seconds wardrobe solution, so I need sleeves to make it office appropriate.

Apart from ticking both those boxes, this gem also offers a lovely waist-tie function, with gathered fabric, that makes it ideal for twirling (yes, I’m a twirler) and feeling that swish-swish of fabric as you walk. I have this floral pattern, but it’s also available in black, if that’s more your style. It goes without saying that Nucleus caters for fuller figures – I’m wearing the size 40, which fits very comfortably and is true to size.

I had a browse through their collection on Zando, and found a few other pieces I’d very happily add to my cupboard – all three fulfilling my dress-and-outerwear shopping manifesto. You can view the full collection on Zando here – I’ve linked to the specific items featured, below.
