Where to find the best breakfasts in Muizenberg

It’s been almost a year since we moved to Muizenberg.

And I feel a fair amount of that time has been spent personally eating my way through the village we now call “home”.

Thankfully, there have been more “hits” than “misses” (what can I say, we moved to a tasty town), but, I now like to think I have true inside knowledge about what delicious morsels are hiding behind stone walls, coloured flags and ocean-facing windows.

So, here you go – my personal list of tried-and-trusted, found-and-feasted breakfasts to enjoy in Muizenberg.

Harvest Café & Deli

A beautiful spot with delicious food that’s not only for the health-conscious

What to order:

The best – and prettiest – avo rose on toast. Suggest adding a poached egg. Their smoothie bowls are also beautiful, and their coffee is among the best in the village. They also have a fantastic deli upstairs, worth popping in for a browse while your coffee is being made – favourite finds include great frozen berries and dim sum.

The Black Cat Cafe

A hole-in-the-wall that punches above its weight

It seems we always feast first, without snapping pics – but, you can view the special and our order in my reel here.

What to order:

I always order one of two things: their smoked salmon and scrambled egg special (currently R60) is a winner – generous, delicious – or, their fried egg, bacon and caramelised onion toasted sandwich on sourdough. Get it as a takeaway and enjoy it on one of the benches on the beachfront. Oh, and also their croissants! Seriously impressive, especially the almond – go early, they sell out quickly.

Hans and Lloyd Coffee Co

Great food and coffee, if you know what to order

What to order:

There’s only one thing I can recommend on their menu, but it’s worth it: called something along the lines of a “surfer’s breakfast bun”: a brioche roll filled with very cheesy scrambled egg, bacon and sriracha mayo, served with potato wedges. Word of warning for the egg snobs, if you order poached eggs, they’re done in “poach pods” which I personally hate. This cheesy scramble is the way to go. Their coffee is also tied first-place with Harvest in my mind – my favourite is the skinny iced mocha, as a take-away, while walking along the beachfront. You’ll thank me later.

Empire Café

Traditional egg-based favourites, done well

What to order:

The best Eggs Benedict – in any of its iterations – in Muizenberg. Whether you want a classic or with a twist, it should be your go-to for a more “traditional” egg-based breakfast. Tip: Sit upstairs for views across the beach.
