I wanted to spoil Luke a little for our one month wedding anniversary – a little treat on a Saturday morning, before an afternoon of DIY at home.
We are both obsessive Eggs Benedict lovers, and something caught my eye on my Twitter timeline the week before – mentioning that those at Bistro Sixteen82 were the best in Cape Town. With a challenge like that, I knew we had to taste it for ourselves and see if the rumors were true.
We’d been to the Bistro before – for the best burgers in Cape Town – and were excited to return to try another winning dish. I admit my expectations were high , especially with the mention of home-cured pork belly bacon.
Two perfectly poached eggs (so perfect, I want to ask Chef Brad how he did them), served on a potato and herb rosti, covered with silky smooth hollandaise, served along side a slow roasted tomato – and of course, the pork belly bacon. Was it the best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had? Without a doubt, a resounding yes.
The eggs had a perfectly set white, with a luxuriously oozing yolk. The rosti was soft and flavourful, and the hollandaise had the perfect balance of richness and acidity – I only added a sprinkling of salt. The pork belly bacon was crisp on top, and the meat below had the texture of pulled pork – rich and meaty.
It was absolute perfection. At under R65 each, it’s a bargain in my eyes and adds a sense of occasion to any weekend morning. This could become a monthly tradition for us. We were greeted with warm honey brioche, and ordered coffee too – but they faded into the background compared the main attraction.
If you know of somewhere else in Cape Town you believe to serve the best Eggs Benedict – let me know. I’m quite happy to take up this search as a professional calling.
Note : We paid for our meal in full – all opinions are my own.
What do you think?
