It’s no secret that I adore Gate69.
We visited soon after they opened last year, for the award-winnig Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a spectacular, honest and thought-provoking show. However, we were keen to return for something a little more light-hearted. And, what more could we ask for than tequila shots, men in wigs and the acerbic humour of Cathy Specific?
Joined by Molly and Holly, Cathy and The Trolley Dollies is the most perfect night out. These three aviation goddesses share their tales of life in the sky through music and witty tales, with a good dose of bitchy humour thrown in for good measure. Let me admit now, that I absolutely adore drag. When the world seems to be filled with nothing but bad news, violence and cruelty, it is so important to just escape for a night and forget about reality. And, Cathy and co will help you do just that.
We ordered a bottle of incredibly well-priced wine to enjoy with our meal – Gate 69 describes it as mezze, but it’s so substantial that we haven’t managed to finish the spread in either of our visits. Breads and hot tomato soup come with a selection of olives, cheeses, pates, dips and spreads, as well as skewers of meatballs and chicken – all included in your ticket price.
I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face from the moment we sat down – long before the show even started. I’m not sure if it’s the personal welcome Cathy gives to all guests, the perfect service by men-in-heels or just the friendly, intimate venue – but, we were quickly so enchanted by life that we even ordered tequila shots. Something I haven’t done since I was about 19. I have no regrets.
The show started and we cheered and laughed our way through the performance, a smile not leaving our faces. The perfect dose of escapism, I urge everyone to take a break from reality and pay The Trolley Dollies a visit. You can catch them on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 29 July 2017. Tickets cost R550pp and include dinner. Book here.
Note: We enjoyed our evening as guests of Gate69. All views and images are my own.
