It’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Johannesburg next week, and I’ll be bringing you trends straight from the runway.
When I found out that one of my favourite local designers would be showing, all it took was a good deal on airfares for me to impulsively book my tickets for the three days. As I’ll be up in Joburg for four days, I’m throwing myself completely at everything #MBFWJ17 and making the most of my time there.
However, the excitement is already well underway – even with 9 days to go. As the looks coming down the runway aren’t complete without the perfect face, I caught up with MAC’s Senior Artist and HOD for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Johannesburg, Raine Tauber, to chat about what we can expect to see on the runway, and a few looks and products to add to your SS18 wish list. So, grab a cup of coffee and let’s talk make up.
Tell us a little about who you are – your background and how you came to be a lipstick-wielding face magician?
I’ve pretty much been interested in make up since I was a small child watching my mom (who is also a make up artist). I went off and studied business while doing make up on the side and ended up realizing that if I wanted to ‘make it’ in this industry, I needed to commit to makeup so I left business school and off I went. Both of my parents are very creative so for me creativity and design were part of the way we did everything at home so I’m happy that I get to call my hobby a job today.
As a makeup artist you tend to travel quite a bit – what are the five items you always carry with you in your personal make up bag?
Fix+ travel size, Lip Conditioner, Casual Colour Lip and Cheek in Weekend Getaway, Upward Lash Mascara and Show Gold Extra Dimension Skinfinish.
Going into SS18, what are the top trends you expect to see on the runway later this month?
We can definitely expect to see a blown out red lip on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg 2017. We can also expect pops of colour, particularly yellow and loads of gloss, on lids, lips and everywhere in between!
What would you consider to be your “signature” look?
My style is probably best described as eclectic and feminine. I like face to look gorgeous and very natural, minimal foundation and powder, soft flushed cheek and then I like to add an element that’s unexpected such as a big glitter liner or black glossy lip. I think my team all know I’m a bit of a magpie.
MAC is constantly bringing out new products, and is quite the trend-setter when it comes to seasonal trends. What is the one new product you can’t wait for consumers to try?
We have just launched a Rollerwheel Liner that is amazing for precision, the end looks like a tiny pizza cutter and it rolls the liner on. It’s a very unusual application method and it really works.
What do you think?
